Mine (Limestone), late 19th Century to early 20th Century.
Extensive pillar-and-stall subsurface workings, extending from approx [NT 0438 6378] in SW to Murieston Road [NT 0492 6445] in NE; a distance of c.1 km. The mine complex is separated into two linked primary areas (probably due to fault throw), the oldest (NE) being around the pit location, and the second (SW) being E & SE of Westfield farm. The SW section was accessed via a relatively centrally-placed 2nd pit at approx [NT 0462 6393]. See abandonment plan (in links) for detailed layout.
Alternative Names: Westfield Limestone Mine
Notes: Shown as operational 'Westfield Mine' on 1895 OS map with air shaft at NT 0496 6435.
Pit shown as being 25 fms (45.7 m) to limestone on AP that shows survey dates of 1908-24 for the SW area around Westfield farm.
Given 1 km length is for main SW-NE axis. Combined length of passages will be significantly more (>10 km).
