Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: 'Old Pit (Ironstone)' shown at given coordinates on OS 6" 1st Ed. to SW of Househill farm, but absent from 2nd editions and geol. survey map. Shown on MRA map at grassy area beside Glenlora Drive, where a short dead-end section (becoming a path into Househill Park) branches off near its northern end.
Mid-19th Century quarry located to W at NS 5227 6116, where an airshaft was marked, possibly associated with the Rough Mussel Pit on the opposite side of the Levern Water.
"Attention then turned to the nearby Househill Estate which had also enjoyed a long period of exploitation, principally for ironstone which had been worked with vigour from the early 19th century when Clyde Iron Works had been attracted to the site as a source of raw material. The ironstone with all the locally wrought ores found use in the works at Nitshill, where at least 2 furnaces can be identified by 1841" [Skillen]
