Mine (Limestone), abandoned 1910.
Mine adit at the NW margin of the pillar-and-stall Murrayshall Limestone Workings (Cambusbarron Mine). Layout shown on abandonment plan (see refs).
Adit. Mine entrance is brick arch 12" thick : span 6' 6": rise from bed 5' : semi circular shape. Arch at entrance has lost a few bricks but general shape not deformed. All sizes estimates. Level of entrance about 13m OD. Tunnel climbs at gradient (?) to maze of lime workings at 277400,692250. Plan shows adit at 277030,692180 fairly close to position of MU on geological map. Estimated level at this point 70m OD. Dip shown on geological map near this location 10 deg NNE. This gives level at top end of access tunnel of approx 26m OD. If tunnel then falls at a steady gradient to entrance at Hayford Mill then gradient would be approx 1:40. Taking the MU layer up into Gillies Hill to adit/shaft would give level of 85m OD which is approximately GL near this openings therefore it is an adit into the MU layer. opening appears 4ft across by maybe 5ft high, cut out of QD face with no masonry surround. It is located at approx 277500,692800 and it is within the area marked on the plan for the extent of the tunnels.
