Railway tunnel, disused.

The Glenfarg Tunnels (comprising two long stone/concrete-built tunnels separated by 1km of line) were first opened in 1890 as part of the direct railway line between Edinburgh and Perth. These became disused following the line's closure in 1970 to facilitate the construction of the M90.

The South tunnel is 472m in length (with a straight 320m section), running through the hill of Pottiehill Clump with the southern entrance opening out onto a stone-built viaduct crossing the River Farg and B966 road.

The tunnel path is shown on the OS 1: 25 000 map.

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: NO 15544 13171 (viaduct end) to NO 15877 13511 (northern end)

The roomy tunnel can still be walked through safely, linked to the North Tunnel by a rough (and potentially boggy) open trackway that follows the former line for 1km.

Whilst a round trip walk is possible (see links), they are probably best accessed North Tunnel first, by following an extension of the track/line from a point along the unclassified road 0.7km south of Newbigging. This starting point is made obvious by the remains of a dismantled railway bridge that formerly crossed the road.

Nearby parking for the above is extremely limited, although a brief widening in the road suitable only for a small vehicle is present ~200m to the NNW. As tempting as it is, DO NOT park in front of the fence as this obstructs the farmer's access point.
