Railway tunnel (19th Century), active.
Built c.1867 as part of the Great North of Scotland Railway, extending south from Hutcheon Street (NJ 93414 06972) to Maberly Street (NJ 93535 06750).
A well-decorated crown-topped ventilation shaft is present along Hutcheon St above, installed as an outlet for smoke/steam when trains had stopped at the former Hutcheon Street Station (1887-1937) in the tunnel area.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: This tunnel passes through an outlier of the Old Red Sandstone, just east of its contact with the Aberdeen granite pluton. This was in part due to the ORS sediments providing the path of least resistance.
Given coordinates are for north exit. Length given as 280 yards by Railscot.
A red-brick station building still stands opposite the ventilation shaft.
