Railway tunnel (19th Century), disused.
At the [former Botanic Gardens] station's north end is Botanic Gardens (or Kirklee) Tunnel, 100 feet below ground at its deepest point and climbing northwards at 1:80 for 220 yards, curving to the east throughout. [Forgotten Relics]
SE portal (Botanic Gardens) located at NS 56759 67466. NW portal (Kelvinside) at NS 56687 67657.
The station was reimagined as a nightclub in 1970 but was then closed down due to a fire reportedly caused by a cigarette during a battle of the bands contest. One passage was uncovered [in 2022] as film crew for the new Batgirl movie (eventually cancelled) utilised the abandoned Botanic Gardens Station, stationing a 'Gotham Transit Authority' Subway car at the station. [Finlay Greig, 2022]
Alternative Names: Botanic Gardens Tunnel, Botanic Gardens Station
Notes: Botanic Gardens Station succumbed to wartime economies between 1st January 1917 and 2nd March 1919; it closed permanently to passengers on 6th February 1939... The platforms remain visible through the ventilation openings located in the Gardens. [Forgotten Relics]
The Kirklee Tunnel is essentially a continuation of the Great Western Road Tunnel, separated by a short opening for the former Botanic Gardens Station.
The line closed in October 1964.
