Drainage level / air shafts (18th Century).
One of at least six air shafts located along the line of the Halbeath Day Level that drained the pits of the Halbeath Colliery (incl. Albert Pit, Queen Pit and Engine Pit alongside Kingseat Road).
The mouth of the day level is shown on Geological maps at NT 1230 8844, now covered by the car park of Halbeath Retail Park, just N of the W end of a long pond (associated with level drainage?). The mouth and shaft/pit localities all appear to have been buried. See notes section for location details.
Alternative Names: Halbeath Day Level, Halbeath Day Level AS4
Notes: Air Shaft #4 (AS4, this entry) is the only site to be labelled on the most recent online OS map.
OS 6" 1856 map shows air shafts at the following localities: AS1 (NT 1230 8850, now SW corner of large retail building), AS2 (1246 8857), AS3 (1250 8867), AS4 (1251 8876), AS5 (1257 8891, garden on Hillview Ct), and AS6 (1260 8904, N end of Pleasance Ct). 1967 & 1971 OS maps show an additional air shaft [AS7] at at NT 12729 89573, immediately N of the old schoolhouse / 'works'.
Exact location of "Mouth of Halbeath Level" vague (assumed to be pronounced kink in burn at start of label).
Location of Albert Pit is now a car park below junction of Kingseat Road with Long Row, whilst Engine Pit was located just N of Chant buildings near sharp bend on Kingseat Rd.
Hydrographic Resurgences: Mowbray Burn / Lyne Burn
