Ironstone mine (19th Century).

Adit mouth with W-trending 'dook' tunnel extended to modest ironstone workings, where an older level extended NE to a 12 fms-deep [22m] pit (probably the shaft marked on geol. survey map at NT 0491 9366). The mine was operated by William Dixon Ltd and abandoned in 1873.

Notes: Excavated a 36 inch-thick blackband layer within a 5ft-thick 'irony' succession.

Labelled as 'Old Ironstone Mine' on 1914 25" OS map. Two separate surface entrances/adits marked on geol. survey map around given coordinates and a short distance further NW at NT 0497 9344. Additional abandoned shaft marked at NT 0497 9339.
