Mines (Limestone, Ironstone), 19th Century.
Shaft site covered / infilled? below field. Additional 'Air Pit' down to the Johnstone Clayband Ironstone was located a short distance to the NE at [NS 4226 6384] and was surveyed in 1881.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Marked as 'Newfield Pit (Ironstone)' on 1857 6" OS map, along with adjacent small bing. Absent from 1897 25" edition. Geol. Survey map states 42 fathoms [77m] to Blackhall Limestone.
This pit to limestone at the given coordinates does not appear on the abandonment plan for the shallower Johnstone CB ironstone workings in this area (see Barbush No.4/6 AP, in refs), suggesting the Newfield Pit may have primarily been a limestone mine.
Given coordinates based on pit shaft location shown on Geological Survey 6" map.
