Mine (Coal, & Ironstone?), 19th c.
Probably supplied at least one of the neighbouring, but now demolished Carnbroe Iron Works (1838-1921) and Calder Iron Works (1800-1921), linked to the pit site by a rail line.
Now located in woodland above the NW bank of the North Calder Water. Pit area appears to have repurposed an older quarry site.
Fatality description indicates that this pit dates back to at least 1863, and was a shaft rather than simply a surface quarry.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Shown as 'Quarry Pit (Ironstone)' on 1864 OS 6" map. No pit feature shown on 1911 version. Geol. Survey map states Upper & Main coal seams at 23 & 60 fms [42 & 110m] (no description of BB.I)
"WALKER Thomas - 1863 - 19/02/1863 - Age 15 - Pony driver. Quarry Pit, Calder (ironstone), WS Dixon, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fell out of the cage apparently when attempting to step off it at mid-working."
Located 270m E of a separate site marked 'Old Pit (Ironstone)' on what is now the corner of Howes St and Burleigh St. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
