In the early '80s I was one of a group of kayakers from Suffolk who camped on Little Colonsay intending to paddle to Staffa to see Fingal's Cave. We woke to find a near gale from the south west which forced us to stay put. We walked around the island and observed a number of blowholes working rather well. We also looked down some of the SW facing cliffs and saw sheets of spray being blown out more or less horizontally at sea level. I would now (2025) describe those as 'blowback features' similar to the well known one at Boscastle, but also seen, for instance at Shieldhill (1), Kinneff, Aberdeenshire. We paddled to Staffa the following day and were able to land on the east side and walk to Fingal's Cave. What impressed me was the amount of dirty sea foam that was blowing around. [N Feilden]
Alternate Names: None recorded.
Notes: The NGR is generic for the SW facing side of the island - not a specific cave or blowhole.
