Coal & ironstone mine (early 20th Century).
Extensive mine complex, connected to No.2 pit via main passage that exploited the No5 coal seam and extended south below the Forth & Clyde Canal. No1 coal seam was followed c.1000 ft east, almost as far as the Mavis Valley buildings. Pit shaft now buried in woodland.
