Mine (Ironstone), late 19th c., possibly early 20th.
Shaft now buried beside putting green, just W of Bearsden Golf Club clubhouse.
Alternative Names: Garscadden No.4 Pit
Notes: Symbol on 1912 geol. survey map suggests that this pit was active at this time. However, features depicted on 1898 25" OS map (bing only) suggest that the pit had been abandoned by 1896. Features absent from 1865 OS map.
Uncertainty exists between Gartconnel & Garscadden colliery pits in this area due to clashes in terminology on 1987 & older Geol. Survey maps; named as 'Gartconnel No.4' (LGI at 150) on 1987 Geol. Survey map, & 'No.4 Garscadden' (UGI at 52 fms [95m]) on 1953 ed. Labelled as 'No.4 Pit' (52 & 61 fms [95 & 111m] to UGI & LGI, respectively ) on 1912 ed. Gartconnel Colliery was in operation in 1877 & operated by Merry & Cunninghame (same owners as Garscadden Colliery coal / ironstone workings). See Garscadden No.1 Pit [Site 8124] for colliery details.
