Mine (Ironstone), late-19th cent.
The original site of Garscube Colliery where ironstone was wrought. A separate phase of the colliery took place further E at Gilshochill where coal was wrought (see database entry #8123 for colliery details). At Dawsholm Park, two adjacent ironstone mine shafts are buried beneath an oval area of rough grass over which surface buildings & the pitheads were formerly present.
The ironstone mine from the No.1 & No.2 pits worked an area (NE of the shafts) on the W side of the River Kelvin, whilst two parallel roadways extended further NE under the river to a more extensive area of longwall ironstone workings which underlie the Garscube Allotments & parts of the West of Scotland Science Park.
See mine plans in refs for extent of workings.
Alternative Names: Garscube Colliery No.1, Garscube Colliery No.2
Notes: No.s 1 & 2 Garscube are labelled on the 1951 geol. survey map, noting U.G.I [Upper Garscadden Ironstone] at 108 fathoms [197m].
Not to be confused with another 'No.1 Pit' (Barclay's Pit) also present on the lands of Garscube; see Garscube No.1 Pit [site #9789].
