Mine (coal), 20th Century.
Disastrous fires in 1931 and 1959 killed 6 and 47 men respectively. The latter is considered the worst mining disaster in Scotland during the 20th century. A centre-piece roadside memorial to the workers is present in Bridgend, close to the roundabout where Auchengeich Rd meets Gartferry Rd.
The pit had two shafts, both 320m deep, No. 1 rectangular and timber-lined, No. 2 round and brick-lined.
The treated shafts are now buried by grassland in a woodland opening, W of the Chryston aggregate works.
Alternative Names: The Geich
Notes: Closed in 1965, abandoned 1982. Details in 1948: Output 880 tons per day, 237,600 tons per annum. 797 employees.
