Mine (Ironstone & Coal), 19th Century.

Extensive ironstone workings on the W side of Crosshouse, E & SE limits of which largely follow the lines of Kilmaurs Rd & Irvine Rd, respectively. No.4 Pit (at given coordinates) was sunk in a central position to the Ell Coal, subsurface roads in which led into the ironstone workings (presumably the slightly shallower Plann Blackband Ironstone).

The workings are joined to those of the No.5 Pit at the southern and structurally deeper end of the complex. The No.5 shaft was 81 fms-deep shaft, and located at NS 3892 3845 (which MRA shows as being below the road of Fisher Way).

Layout shown on abandonment plan (see refs).

Alternative Names: None recorded.

Notes: 8 fig. NGR derived using OS georef' tool (using geol. survey map).
