Mine (Limestone, & coal?), 19th Century.
"The limestone lies in a shallow basin here, and has a general northerly dip. A series of old mines marks the course of the outcrop along the side of the R. Nethan north-westwards to where it crosses the river south-west of Auchenheath station." [Robertson, 1949]
Marked as 'Mine' served by a tramway beside limekilns on 1st Ed. OS maps, but labelled as 'Old Coal Pit' (without kilns shown) on later editions. It is possible that the limestone mine eventually mined the Hurlet Coal, or that the 2nd Ed. surveyors assumed this was a coal mine due to several other being present in the Auchenheath area. The site is now located on the edge of a wooded area, probably blocked.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: 8 fig coordinates derived using OS georef. tool (using 1st Ed. 6").
The MRA map shows an additional adit a short distance to the NW, beside the same strip of woodland.
The mineral tramway connected to the Lesmahagow Branch Railway.
