Mine (Ironstone), 19th Century.
Marked on geol. survey map as Bankhead Pit reaching ironstone at 136 fms [249m]. This is probably the 'old pit' marking the northern extremity of the Monkcastle Mine [Site 3105], shown as being connected to the fireclay works in the Monkcastle abandonment plan (possibly acting as a ventilation shaft). As such, the shaft is possibly open from the fireclay workings, but is almost certainly blocked at the surface where overgrown undulating ground beside Castlehead Stables reflects the former ironstone surface workings.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: 8 fig coordinates derived using OS georef. tool (geol. map).
