Mine (Ironstone, & later Coal), abandoned pre-1859, reopened c.1890-1910.
Significant longwall ironstone workings driven through multiple seams to S of Forth & Clyde Canal; mostly in Banton Blackband Ironstone (abandoned in 1903), with subordinate workings in the Garibaldi Clayband Ironstone & No.9 Clayband Ironstone seams (abandoned in 1893 & 1894, respectively). The No.1, No.2 & No.3 Pits, situated towards the NE side of the worked area, were interconnected by way of cross-cut mine levels. The complex extended NW as far as ~[NS 7209 7645] on the W side of the B802 road (S of Auchinstarry roundabout), & as far S as the westernmost point of the quarry lochan at ~[ NS 7293 7606]. The Banton workings extended ca. 1km from their NW to SE extremities. See abandonment plans (in refs) for extents.
Marked as 'Old Pit (Ironstone)' on OS 1st Ed. map. Probably reopened as part of Nethercroy Colliery that was producing ironstone & coal in 1894/1900, but only coal in 1905/1910. Shaft site is now occupied by woodland, probably blocked/buried.
Alternative Names: Nethercroy Colliery No.1 Pit
Notes: Labelled on geol. map as 58 fathoms [106m] to 'No.9 Clayband Ironstone', and 80 fathoms [146m] to Kilsyth Coking Coal on geol. map (that uses active shaft symbol whilst No.2 / 3 are marked as abandoned).
Only one shaft marked here on MRA map, suggesting deepening of pre-existing ironstone shaft. Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
