The 18 m wide north entrance of the cavern part of Needle's Eye, Cullykhan.

The south entrance is narrow and 7 m tall and looks very much like the eye of a needle - much more so than most of the other caves with this name. But the narrow part only extends 15 m before opening out into a cavern which is 24 m wide at its widest. The cavern is nearly all intertidal. It has three small cave extensions on the west side - a narrow rift 4 m long, near this entrance; a larger rift tunnel 9 m long in the middle and a 3.4 m alcove a bit further south. On the east side, near this entrance, but overhung by it, is a side tunnel running about 18 m east where it meets the tunnel from the NE entrance. The NE entrance tunnel runs S for a total of 27 m. There are three rift extensions totalling a further 16 m.

Alternative Names: Devil's Dining Room

Notes: Access: by sea NW from Mill Shore or Pennan, or New Aberdour or E from Gardenstown. Preferably near high tide.

by land from the beach of Cullykhan Bay at low tide and through the S entrance.

Main cavern measured 23/8/25 by N Feilden. Initial estimates by Iain Greig in 2021. The main cavern totalled 67 m consisting of 51 m between N and S entrances plus a further 16 m for the 3 small side tunnels. The ENE tunnel and the NE entrance tunnel were measured to add a further 61 m on 5/9/25. This consists of 18 m for the ENE tunnel, 26.5 m for the wide part of the tunnel S from the NE entrance, and 16.2 m for the three rift extensions.
