Mine (Ironstone), 19th Century.
Shaft site now buried below Lanrigg Avenue, adjacent to nursery. Mine formerly served by mineral railway (now demolished).
"Ironstone is taken in great quantities from this mine; it is worked by two steam engines, one being of 24 horse power used for withdrawing the water, and the other of 15 horse power for withdrawing the mineral and refuse, the depth of shaft is 42 fathoms and the thickness of seam 11 inches; leased and worked by the Coltness Iron Company; and the property of John Storry Esqr" [OS Namebook]
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Geol. survey map states 42 fms to C.SB (77m to Crofthead Slatyband Ironstone) at given coordinates.
Given name tentative, as "Eastfield Iron Mine No 3" mine label on 1st Ed. OS map is closer to the pit that is named Eastfield No.2 on geological survey map. However, the depth of 42 fms matches the description for No 3 Mine given in the OS Namebook (unlike the eastern shaft that states 40 fms).
8 fig. NGR based upon location on MRA map.
