Mine (Ironstone), 19th Century.

Operated by the Coltness Iron Co. A death announcement in an 1861 ed. of Caledonian Mercury (occuring after an accident whilst blasting ironstone) indicates that the mine was being worked for iron at this time. The shaft site is now occupied by woodland.

Alternative Names: Conjoint No.1 Pit

Notes: 1898 ed. of the OS map (surveyed 1895) shows the remnant mineral railway that led to Pit No.11 with no depiction of the pit itself, hence the latter almost certainly closed pre-1895. The pit / railway must be post-1854 as they are absent from the 1st Ed. OS map that was surveyed at this time.

Given 8 fig NGR based on Scottish Shale site / MRA.
