Ice-house, early 19th Century.
Igloo-like structure with thin soil cover, on side of which is a large tree. A gated arched entrance allows a view into the chamber located along the NE margin of Stanley Hill, within woodland. In contrast to most Scottish icehouses, there is no separate entrance chamber. A short, walled open 'trench' leads up to the only doorway instead. Built from stone-rubble & mortar.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: "Around 1730, the 2nd Duke [of Atholl] decided to landscape Stanley Hill, originally a natural hill that formed a backdrop to an earlier residence, with a terraced mound giving a fortified effect that was enhanced by the addition of cannons. An ice house was later carved into the north side of the hill to store ice for the estate." [Highland Perthshire]
"Set low down on the northeast side is an ice house, thought to date from c1830." [NTS]
Not to be confused with Stanley House Icehouse (E of Stanley Mills, Stanley).
