Mine (Ironstone & Coal), 19th to early 20th Century.

Possibly a redevelopment of the original Eastfield No.4 shaft (90 fms deep). No.5 Pit shaft site now occupied by heathland beside telecommunications mast.

Notes: Geological Survey map states 100 fms (179 m) to Crofthead Slatyband Ironstone. Labelled as Crofthead Colliery Pit No 5 on 1898 25" OS map, and probably the "Eastfield Iron Mine (No.4)" on 1st Ed 6" map (possibly separate adjacent shaft).

Coal (Manufacturing, Steam) & Ironstone were being produced in 1915 & 1920. Operated by Coltness Iron Company

& Crofthead Iron Co.

OS Name Book entry for Eastfield No.4 Mine: "This is a large Mine, being worked by 3 Engines. Two used for the Pumps (80 horse power and 50 horse power) and One for withdrawing minerals and refuse (18 horse power). the depth of shaft being 90 fathoms and the thickness of seam 13 inches: very fine Ironstone is taken from this Mine: it is leased and worked by the Coltness Iron company and is the property of John Storry of Burnhead by Longridge."
