Mine (Antimony).
Alternative Names: Knipe Mine (The), Knipes Mine (The), Fountainhead Antimony Mine
Notes: The Knipes Antimony Mine NS657104, 3 miles SSE of New Cumnock in New Cumnock parish near centre of small Knipes / Hare Hill granite mass. Vein opened in 1850s as trial but none of ore taken away (probably transport difficulties in remote location). 12-18 inch wide vein runs N-S, nearly vertical, consisting of quartz penetrated by stibnite crystals 2 ½ - 3 inches long (smaller crystals in cavities show characteristic twisted form). Occasional masses & strings of mineralup to 8 inch thick. All common oxidation products present. (cervantite, valentinite & kermesite). Doubtful records of Cinnabar (Hgs) but probably misidentified. Single specimen of jamesonite (dubious as no iron or lead from this vein).
Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
