Mine (Fireclay), 20th c.

The initial 'Tannoch Mine' was a small-scale interconnected complex in Glenboig Lower Fireclay seam, abandoned in 1952. Abandonment Plan shows main passage from No.1 mouth extending N for just c.250 ft, whilst passage N from No.2 mine is c.100ft. Site of adit mouth (in fireclay outcrop) now situated in woodland on N side of the Luggie Water. A 'No.2 Mine' mouth, essentially another entrance to the same small complex, is/was located a short distance NW at approx. [NS 7847 7248].

Rumlay Mine appears to have been a significantly more extensive redevelopment of the Lower Fireclay seam, mined in grid form & operated by Thos. McDonach during the 1960s / early 70s. The complex extends NW as far as ~[NS 7827 7283]; the straight line distance between this and the No.1 adit being ca. 420m. The combined length of passages within will be significantly longer, in the order of several kilometres. The complex had/has four adits clustered around the given coordinates, and an outlying adit further W at [NS 7837 7252]. All adit sites are located near the N bank of the Luggie Water, at the S end of the workings. See abandonment plans in refs for detailed layout.

Alternative Names: Tannoch Mine, Tannoch No.1 Mine

Notes: Given 8 fig. NGR coordinates are for No.1 Mine mouth as shown on abandonment plan, beside 'Adit' on OS map (online version).

Geological Survey map states fireclay is 4' 6" thick at this locality. Overlies 2ft ganister seam.
