Limestone Mine(s), 19th Century.

A series of limestone mine adits have been driven into the Murrayshall Limestone along the SW side of Gillies Hill where the seam underlies a layer of whinstone. There is evidence that the limekilns in the area have been in production from about 1790 into the 20th Century, producing lime to be used in building mortars, iron production and agriculture. The remains of kilns can be found at Murrayshall Limeworks on the SW of Gillies Hill.

Alternative Names: Murrayshall Lime Works

Notes: See also: Gillies Hill [Overview]

The BGS have listed at least five adits near the Murrayshall Lime Works at: [NS 77135 91170], [77155 91135], [77160 91115], [77170 91015], & [77390 90855]. At the time of writing, these are not acknowledged on the MRA map.

'Limestone Mine' & Murrayshall Lime Works' are depicted on 1st Ed. OS map at [NS 7716 9104] & [NS 77355 90854], respectively.

This mine system is separate to the Cambusbarron Mine at the northern end of Gillies Hill, which is described as 'Murrayshall Limestone Workings' (possibly as a general description of 'workings within Murrayshall Limestone', as opposed to any given mine name).

The 'Murrayshall Limestone' is a correlative of the Hurlet Limestone.
