Culvert (20th c).
Carries the Espedair Burn underground around the western side of Saucel Hill, from Charleston [at given coords] to the outfall beside Paisley Canal St Station [NS 48365 63430]. This includes a section between Espedair Street & Stockholm Crescent that has been intersected by the more recent Paisley Tunnel, accessed by a shaft at [NS 4841 6313].
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Given length approx, based on path of burn shown on 2nd Ed. OS map (pre-culvert), indicating that the culvert was constructed post-1896. However, the final 50m of the culvert had been covered by 1896, passing below the (Espedair?) Dye Works and railway line (latter follows the route of a former canal that the burn passed under in 1858).
Temporary blockage of this culvert has previously resulted in significant flooding of the Espedair St / Stockholm Crescent area, a factor in the development of the Paisley Tunnel.
