One of two caves at the upper end of an inlet north of Garryharry (a small headland SW of Kirkauchline). One or both of these caves may be Dove Cave.
A single cave called Dove Cave is marked on the 6" OS map of 1850. Two caves are marked on the 25" OS map of 1893 north-east of a rocky headland marked as Garryharry, both with a possible length of 5-10 m.
Alternative Names: Dove Cave
Notes: Garradh, Norse gardr, modernised garth, was an enclosure. From the Celtic root we have Garryharry.
GARRIE. 'Stoneykirk.' A word used in Galloway to express a rough, stony space of ground, a moraine - garbh [garve, garriv], rough. A garry o' stanes is a common expression.
