Mine (Oil Shale), 1906-56.
Extensive area of pillar-and-stall workings, underlying the E parts of Hopetoun Wood, an area immediately E of Duntarvie, Duddingston Wood / Duddingston, & an eastern area of Deer Park (the workings essentially curved around the buildings of Newton & Woodend). Adit site now occupied by rough grassland.
"A productive mine exploiting the Pumpherston Shales from beneath a substantial area of the Hopetoun Estate. Shale was transported to Niddry Castle Crude Oil Works by electric tramway. Oil shale was also produced from a quarry lying north west of No.3 mine. " [Scottish Shale]
Easternmost & westernmost points of mine at approx. [NT 10654 77511] & [NT 08040 77776], respectively; points separated by 2.6 km. Location of quarries marked by strips of woodland beside Newton.
