Mine (Oil Shale), c.1907-38.
Served Deans Crude Oil Works. One of three new mines opened c.1907 by the Pumpherston Oil Company. [Scottish Shale]
Two neighbouring adits, both now buried below derelict area of vegetation, were located at E end of mine system. The workings were relatively extensive; undermining most of the non-residential area between the given coordinates & Boghall (which has probably avoided residential development due to subsidence risk). Undermined areas include sections of the railway, Old Deans Road, woodland on E side of the Boghall Roundabout, & the intervening expanse of vacant land beside the M8 motorway. The westernmost extremity of the mine was at ~[NS 9975 6797], c.1.4 km W of the adits. The NW point was around Andrew Ave [NS 9986 6856] where an old quarry was formerly present, & southermost point S of the railway at ~[NT 0015 6776].
Alternative Names: Deans Oil Works Mine No 4
Notes: Given coordinates (for site of N adit) derived from BGS GeoIndex.
Area described based on digitised survey outline shown on Scottish Shale website.
