Mines (Coal & Ironstone, later Coal & Fireclay).
Operated from 1855 to Sept 1940, owned by Robert Addie and Sons (Collieries Ltd) from 1896 onwards. Produced ironstone & coal from multiple pits during the mid 19th Century. The ironstone workings appears to have been abandoned c.1869, & fireclay was also produced in addition to coal during the early 20th Century.
The extensive area of ironstone workings alone measure c. 1.9km from their NW to SE extremities, at approx [NS 7247 6380] at western Croy Road and [7411 6288] at East Shawhead Industrial Estate, respectively. The combined passage length will be significantly longer. See abandonment plan for layout (in refs.)
At least 99 fatalities have been recorded from this colliery, five of which related to an explosion on 14th Aug 1934.
Alternative Names: Rosehall No.5 Pit
Notes: Given coordinates are for the colliery's No.5 Pit shaft (159 fms [291m] to Kiltongue Coal, with blackband at 130 fms [238m]).
Ironstone was produced from pits Nos 5, 6, 9, & 10. These Airdrie BB.I. workings were also accessed via a stone mine from Pit No.11.
