Barncraig Day Level

Duke St, West Wemyss, Fife.

Site of day level mouth that was probably present at the base of sea-defence wall, probably driven during the mid- or early-19th century to drain coal workings below the village of West Wemyss (possibly the Coxtool Coal workings of the nearby Barncraig Pit [site 11775]). Level mouth appears to be buried below beach sediment, or possibly behind sea wall.

Mine plan S4381 shows the "supposed path of Barne-craig Day Level" extending under much of Church St and into the lands of Wemyss Castle beyond.

Notes: Labelled as adit on MRA map (states adit angle of 30). Given coordinates based on mine plan S4381.

Mine plan S2306 indicates that old Chemiss Coal workings are present across this area below West Wemyss & Wemyss Castle (and offshore area to the S), accessed by the Wemyss Pit that the MRA places below buildings between Main St & Duke St at approx [NT 32637 94665]. However, these probably occur at a deeper level than the day level.
