Coxtool Day Level

West Wemyss, Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Site of day level mouth, probably driven during the mid-19th cent.

The mouth was formerly at beach level below the W end of Main St, now buried below a residential garden where the land has been reclaimed & is now protected by rip-rap. The level has probably been driven the Lower (2 Foot) Coxtool Coal seam.

This probably drained a small-scale area of longwall workings in the Coxtool Coal that was abandoned in 1836 & is located under woodland N of The Cross, centred approx on [NT 3264 9482]. This was accessed by N-trending passageways from the now-treated Coxtool Pit at Duke St, approx [NT 32585 94645].

Also nearby are the Stair Pit [NT 3249 9466] & the Reservoir Pit [NT 32528 94664], both of which are treated shafts.
