Site of shaft to 19th century workings in the Lower Five Foot Coal which extend S & SW under Blackfolds Farm & are contiguous with those of the Burneye Engine Shaft (at SW end of Devon Village [NS 90215 95710]). Willie's Pulpit Shaft was treated/capped in 1957 & remnants of an overgrown associated bing are still visible on S side of A908 road.

A disused shaft, lying immediately S of a railway cutting, is depicted on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1979). The cutting is shown to have cut through the spoil extending around the shaft, suggesting that the shaft was in operation before the construction of the railway. Indeed, there is an area of rough ground depicted, at this location, on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perth and Clackmannan 1866, sheet cxxxiv) suggestive of mine workings. [Trove.scot]
