Mine (Coal), mid-19th cent' or earlier.
Shaft marked on Geological Survey map (within an isolated oxbow of the River Devon formed by the canalisation of a length of the river), site of which is now occupied by woodland. This accessed workings in the Alloa Cherry Coal on the SW side of the River Devon, much of which were probably stooped-out around the neighbouring old No.1 & No.2 shafts (see mine plan S4743, in refs).
Alternative Names: Old Cobblecrook No.1 Shaft, Cobblecrook Old Pit No.1
Notes: East part of oxbow now hidden in woodland.
The 'New' Cobblecrook Pits (e.g. Caroline Row Pit) pre-date 1872, hence the old pits must be older (probably early 19th century). The Old No.1 Pit should not be confused with the 'new' Cobblecrook No.1 Pit further NE, also known as the Caroline Row Pit.
The Alloa Cherry Coal is equivalent to the Lower Five Foot Coal.
