Kennet No.1 Pit

Mannan Drive, Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire.

Mine (Coal), mid-19th cent.

Abandoned shaft, Alloa Cherry Coal at 16 fathoms, marked on Geological Survey map. Now buried below small area of grassland adjacent to Mannan Drive, formerly open field. This formed part of Kennet Colliery, situated on lands which would later be leased to & re-developed by Brucefield Colliery. The site of the Kennet No.1 Pit is situated near the NW margin of the Brucefield complex.

"Alloa Fatal Coal Pit Accident - On Wednesday forenoon, a miner named John Condy Paterson, while at work in one of the Kennet Pits, near Clackmannan, was instantly deprived of life, by a stone falling from the roof upon his head. The deceased was in his 20th year and leaves a widowed mother who was dependant upon him for support" [Herald, 20/06/1862]

Notes: Mine plan S4471 states depth of 16 fms [29m], named only 'old shaft'. MRA states name of No.1 Shaft. Given coordinates based on MRA map, although site shown on Geol' Survey map places it at site occupied by housing at [NS 91910 91547].

Pit situated on lands formerly leased to Brucefield Colliery (not Tulligarth / Southfield).

Alloa Cherry Coal also known as the Lower Five Foot Coal. Curiously, the mine plan for the Cherry Coal does not show a pit at this locality.

The No.1 pit must have been in operation prior to 1862 when an accident was reported in the No.2 pit
