Engine Pit [Clackmannan]

Shaft marked on Geological Survey map, & labelled as 'old coal pit' on OS map of 1866. Shaft has been treated & is now buried below driveway of residential property. Accessed extensive longwall workings in the Cherry Coal near W margin of the workings that extended E to the Southfield Colliery (S of Tullygarth; see mine plan S4461, & Southfield Mine [site #11418]).

Pit marked on mine plan S4461 is discrete & non-annotated. Named 'Engine Pit' (between two crop pits) on plan S4721 (dated 1840).
