Maw Skelly Sea Cave

Sea Cave about 50 m SW of Maw Skerry.

This stretch of shore is of particular geological interest because there are numerous exposures of contacts between the Ethie Lavas and the Old Red Sandstone. [Anne Burgess]

The coast between Auchmithie and Rumness Point is NOT part of the Whiting Ness - Ethie Haven SSSI.

Maw Skelly - This name applies to a part of the rocks where a great number of Sea Gulls build their nests. [Scotland's Places] Possible but not convincing. Not impossible that the name has nothing to do with its reputation. Maw possibly mouths, Skelly possibly a corruption of Skerry (reef or rocky foreshore) hence mouth or opening on the rocky foreshore.
