Maw Skelly - On the shore At the east end of the parish. This name applies to a part of the rocks where a great number of Sea Gulls build their nests.[Scotland's Places] Most probable the reputation of the place has nothing to do with its name. Suggest Maw means mouth and Skelly may be a corruption of Skerry or rocky foreshore. Hence the mouth or opening on the rocky foreshore.
