Mine (shale), c.1864-65.
Vertical shaft that served Addiewell Oil Works, now located along wooded roadside margin. A short-lived pit to a small reserve of Raeburn Shale, which was also accessed by a mine labelled as "No. 1". [Scottish Shale] - see Addiewell No.1 Mine.
Workings pass under the B792 road to a point just NE of the prison grounds. Distance between N & S extremities of the Raeburn workings, via centrally-placed shaft site, is c.260 m; approx [NT 0004 6302] to [0009 6279].

Notes: Shown as "old shaft" on the Ordnance Survey map of c.1893, subsequent editions show an enclosure erected around the shaft. Owned by James Young & Co. / Young's Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co. Ltd. [Scottish Shale]
12 fathom [22m] deep shaft to Mungle Shale shown slightly further W on Geol. Survey map at NS 9997 6285 (the W-most of two shafts marked on MRA map).
