Mine (Limestone), 19th Century.
Small-scale mine workings that was connected to the larger limestone mine system via a now-buried coal pit (26m deep to Dross Coal) to the SW at [NS 8163 3443].
The mouth to the limestone mine was located at an old quarry and appears to be buried by heathland. Probably supplied the Poneil Lime Works at Braehead (became site of Poneil Coal Pit).
"Coalburn to Bankend: The Index Limestone was worked here. There are abandoned quarries at Shodrigg and Auchenbegg to the west of Coalburn, and quarries and mines at the Poneil Lime Works at Braehead. The section of the worked seam in the Poneil mines (abandoned 1914) shows: shale roof; limestone, 5 ft. 9 in.; fireclay pavement." [Robertson, 1949]
Alternative Names: Poneil Limestone Mine
Notes: Marked on geol. survey map as "mine to limestone".
8 fig coordinates derived using OS georef. tool (geol. map).
