Mine (Limestone), 19th Century.

Now-blocked drift mine into extensive complex that was also accessed by the pre-existing entry points of Levenseat Pits No.1, 2 & 3. These mine workings were developed in two stages, the latter being under Messrs Peter Mitchell & Sons. The earlier phase extended SW as far as a precursor to Levenseat House at [NS 9438 5925], & NW as far as [NS 942 5948]. Following the later stage, the northern section of the complex extended slightly further NW [to NS 9421 5952], and a southern extension was developed S of Levenseat House that was accessed via a N-S-trending tunnel from Pit No.2. The complex opened post-1855 & closed in 1888.

Alternative Names: Levenseat Mine

Notes: Site absent from 1856 OS map (surveyed 1854-5). No.1 Pit is omitted from the abandonment plan, which should be shown beside air pit adjacent to mine mouth.

Given 8 fig. NGR based upon images on Scottish Shale website (based on limestone workings abandonment plan).
