Mine (Ironstone), abandoned pre-1859.
Shaft now buried under E verge of the A73 dual carriageway. An air pit at [NS 80978 58011] marked the NW extremity of the worked area that measured ca. 550m-wide from WNW-ESE. These workings were separated from those of Westwood No.1 Pit to the E by a buffer zone that followed the 'Rattler Strip' burn. See abandonment plan (in refs) for extent.
Alternative Names: Spindleside Pit
Notes: Operated by H.W. Lewin. Labelled as 'Old Ironstone Pit' on 1864 OS map.
Ironstone workings were connected to those in the Virtuewell Coal by way of a blind pit at the W end (cf. connection to Spindleside Colliery No. 2 Pit).
Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
