Ironstone & coal mine, mid-19th (to early 20th c.?)
Relatively extensive area of ironstone workings (measuring ca. 650m from northern to southernmost extremities), separated from those of Spindleside No.1 Pit to W by a buffer that followed the 'Rattler Strip' burn. Shaft site now occupied by forestry. Labelled as an active 'Ironstone Pit' on 1864 OS map, later formed part of Murdostoun Colliery (depicted as an active pit on 1898 OS map). Shaft now buried below pasture.
The 1864 OS map shows this pit situated at the S terminus of a mineral railway that led to the Omoa Iron Works, continuing onwards to connect with the Caledonian Railway by Carfin. This mineral railway pre-dated the Edinburgh-Glasgow railway & had been demolished by 1898.
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Given coordinates derived from BGS GeoIndex.
Not to be confused with the Westwood No.1 Pit (shale mine), West Lothian.
