Mine (Coal), 18th or 19th cent. Shaft treated, now buried below grassy ground within residential estate. This was probably a bell pit, which were sometimes known as 'stair pits'.
"This Stair Pit was located between crops of Two Foot and Five Foot Coals in the north-west corner of the [Crombie coal] field close to Whyte's Pit." [Fife Pits]
