Mine (Coal), late-19th cent.
Site of mine mouth that formed part of the Little Raith Colliery, now buried below the A92 dual carriageway, 190m W of a sharp bend in the Lochgelly Burn. This portal led N & accessed the SW part of a 0.6 km-wide area of room-and-pillar workings in the Lochgelly Parrot Coal, also working the overlying Splint Coal (separated from the Parrot Coal by a 1' 3" fireclay) to its crop. Approx 20m NE of the portal was a shaft at [NT 17768 91735], which helped ventilate this mine. Both the mine mouth & air shaft appear to be buried below the road.
A tramway leading into the mine mouth from the neighbouring Whiskey Neuk Pit is shown on the OS 25" map of 1896.
