Mine
Quilkiestone possibly old scots spelling of whetstone but more likely Wilkiestone. Baked, hardened shale from Sundrum Mine & Quilkiestone Mine near Stair used as honestone or whetstone for sharpening tools. Sold as 'Water of Ayr Stone' or 'Tam O'Shanter Stone'. Not currently operating, but resources may still exist. Shaft & Level on 6" OS 1897 sheet 34NW.
