Generic reference to caves on the island of Dun, St Kilda. Coordinates given are for Bioda Mor, the highest point on the island. There is no cave at this location.
Dun is a small narrow rocky island immediately to the south-east of Hirta (the largest island in St. Kilda archipelago). It consists of one central ridge with a grassed slope to the N rising to the top of the island and steep rocky cliffs to the S. Lower cliffs along the norrth shore have been scoured by the Atlantic waves.
There is a cave marked on OS maps at Caolas an Dun at the west end of the island, a large natural arch (52 m long) at An Fhaing on the south side, two connected large natural arches (Through Cave (1) & (2), 70 m and 40 m long ) at the east end of the island. and at least one long (60 m) sea cave at Na Sgarain as well as shorter natural arches, deep undercuts and overhangs. Some rockshelters have also been identified as archaeological sites.
Divers have also identified several sites where there are sublittoral caves.
