Railway tunnels (19th & 20th Century)
A tunnel opening immediately NW of Exhibition Centre Station (NS 5717 6554) was the shared eastern portal for two partially underground lines; the Glasgow Central Line (Stobcross Depot Tunnel leading N to St Vincent Crescent Tunnel & eventually Kelvingrove Tunnel), and the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Line (initially 690m long Kelvinhaugh Tunnel leading NW to Yorkhill Tunnel). The original setup is best explained by the labelled 1964 OS 1:2500 map.
Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Line section:
The Kelvinhaugh Tunnel currently extends from the shared Exhibition Centre E portal at NS 5717 6554 to a W portal at NS 56371 65880 (near Sandyford St). Its original 19th Century W portal was located further east at NS 5656 6581 (by Kelvinhaugh St / Yorkhill St junction) where a short open section led on into the now abandoned Yorkhill Tunnel (that extends NW from NS 5653 6587 (Gilbert St) to NS 5638 6624 (Old Dumbarton Rd)). The Yorkhill Tunnel is now blocked by landfill at its southern end and sealed off at its northern portal. The formerly-open intervening section between the two tunnels (between Gilbert St & Kelvinhaugh St) is now covered by a garden area.
Glasgow Central Line section:
The disused Stobcross Depot Tunnel (operational 1896-1960) extends from the shared portal at Exhibition Centre northwards to NS 5711 6569 (just N of Minerva Way). It is sealed at its southern end (where it would otherwise open into the Kelvinhaugh Tunnel). Whilst the now-abandoned line could be followed north to the shorter (c.70m) St Vincent Crescent Tunnel (and in turn the Kelvingrove Tunnel beyond that), the intervening open section is cross-cut by an active E-W surface trainline.
Alternative Names: Kelvinhaugh Tunnel, Kelvinhaugh Railway Tunnel, Yorkhill Railway Tunnel, Yorkhill Tunnel, Stobcross Depot Railway Tunnel, Stobcross Depot Tunnel
Notes: Stobcross Depot Tunnel should not to be confused with the separate Stobcross Street Tunnel.
Given coordinates are for the common SE exit.
The Exhibition Centre station was formerly named Finnieston (1979-1986) and Stobcross (1894-1959).
